Two New Micro Wallets by Muhammad Ilyas Saputro: Happiness and Fearless

Today at 6:30 PM EST, Paperwallet is dropping two new Micro Wallets from the same artist on the same day. Happiness and Fearless are both designed by Indonesian illustrator Muhammad Ilyas Saputro.

About the Artist

Muhammad Ilyas Saputro is an illustrator based in Indonesia who works under the name Sapstudio. His style sits somewhere between character illustration and digital painting. Bold outlines, expressive faces, lots of color layering. If you follow the Southeast Asian illustration scene on Instagram, his work fits that world. Hand-drawn energy, digital polish.

This is his first collaboration with Paperwallet. We found his work through our ongoing search for artists whose style translates well to the wallet format. Not every illustration works at wallet scale. Saputro's does, because his compositions are dense enough to hold up on a small surface without losing detail.

Happiness

Happiness runs warm. The palette is yellows, soft oranges, and light pinks. The characters in the illustration have relaxed postures and open expressions. There's a looseness to the linework that feels casual in a good way.

What we noticed when we printed the first test run: the warm tones on Tyvek are brighter than they look on screen. Digital yellows and oranges tend to flatten out on most print surfaces, but Tyvek's smooth white base lets them pop. The result is a wallet that's genuinely cheerful to look at. That sounds like a weird thing to say about a wallet, but it's true. You pull it out and the colors hit you.

From a practical standpoint, the light palette also means the design ages well. Darker wallets show wear patterns faster because creases catch light differently against dark ink. Light-colored designs like Happiness tend to look newer longer.

Fearless

Fearless goes the other direction. Deeper colors, heavier line weight, more contrast between elements. The characters have a different stance here. More direct, more intense. Where Happiness feels like a deep breath, Fearless feels like eye contact.

The dark palette on this one required some production tweaking. Saputro's original file used color gradients that looked great on screen but needed adjustment for Tyvek printing. Our production team ran several test prints to make sure the dark tones stayed distinct from each other instead of muddying together. The final version keeps all the contrast of the original digital piece.

If Happiness is the wallet you carry on easy days, Fearless is the one for days when you need to show up. That's how our team started thinking about them during production, and it stuck.

Why Release Both at Once

We've learned something from years of artist collaborations: when an artist sends us two strong designs, splitting them across different release dates waters both down. Each one launches to half the attention. Releasing them together lets people see the range and make a choice. Some customers will pick one. Some will grab both. Either way, seeing them side by side tells a fuller story about the artist's work than either design would alone.

It also gives us a natural comparison point for people browsing the Micro Wallet collection. If you're drawn to bright, upbeat designs, Happiness is right there. If you lean toward something with more edge, Fearless. The choice says something about the buyer, which is the whole point of carrying an artist-designed wallet.

The Micro Wallet Format

Both designs are Micro Wallets. That's the compact format: holds 6 to 8 cards and folded cash, roughly credit-card-sized when closed, about 1.3mm thin. Made from Tyvek, so waterproof and tear-resistant. It's the wallet for people who carry light and want something that disappears in a front pocket.

The Micro format works well for Saputro's illustration style. His art is detailed at small scale. The character expressions, the line variation, the color transitions, none of it gets lost when the design shrinks to wallet size. If anything, the compact surface makes the art feel more concentrated.

Limited Run

Both Happiness and Fearless drop April 4 in the Micro Wallet collection. Limited edition, as always. When they sell out, they won't be reprinted.
