The Starry Night and Sunflowers: Van Gogh on Tyvek, June 2

On June 2, Paperwallet is releasing two new Micro Wallets featuring paintings by Vincent van Gogh. The Starry Night (1889) and Sunflowers (1888). Two of the most reproduced paintings in art history, now on a wallet you can put in your front pocket. Both are limited edition. Once they sell out, we don't reprint.

The Designs

The Starry Night reproduces Van Gogh's famous night sky scene with the swirling clouds, the cypress tree in the foreground, and the small village below. You've seen this painting on dorm room posters, coffee mugs, museum gift shop merchandise, and probably a friend's tote bag. It hangs in the Museum of Modern Art in New York, where it's been since 1941. It's one of those images that's instantly recognizable even to people who don't follow art.

Sunflowers reproduces the most famous version of Van Gogh's sunflower series. The yellow vase on the yellow background with the yellow flowers. Painted in 1888 during the period when he was living in Arles in southern France. The painting currently lives at the National Gallery in London. It's another image that's been reproduced more times than anyone can count, but the original still has something the reproductions don't.

Why These Two

We did the Japanese Masters Blind Collection in May with Hokusai and Hiroshige prints. The response told us that customers want famous art on wallets. Not just custom illustrations, but recognizable masterpieces. Van Gogh was the obvious next direction because his paintings have the same combination ukiyo-e has: bold color, confident composition, and worldwide recognition.

The Starry Night and Sunflowers also pair well together. They're from the same period in Van Gogh's life (1888 to 1889), they share his characteristic thick paint application and visible brushwork, and they sit at opposite ends of his emotional range. Sunflowers is warm and direct. The Starry Night is restless and dreaming. Two sides of the same painter.

How These Reproduce on Tyvek

Van Gogh's paintings are challenging to reproduce because the originals depend so much on physical texture. The thick impasto brushwork (paint applied so heavily you can see the brush bristles) doesn't translate to any flat reproduction. We knew that going in. The goal wasn't to fake the texture. It was to get the color and composition right so the print still reads as Van Gogh's work, even without the physical depth.

UV-cured ink on Tyvek handles the high-contrast color blocks well. The blue and gold tones in The Starry Night come through cleanly. The yellow saturation in Sunflowers holds up without washing out. We worked from high-resolution scans available through museum archives and adjusted for how the original pigments translate to wallet scale.

Famous Art on Something You Actually Use

This is the part that interests us about doing famous artworks. Most reproductions of Van Gogh end up on decorative items. Posters on a wall, prints in a frame, mugs in a cabinet. They get looked at occasionally. A wallet is different. You pull it out 10 times a day. The art ends up integrated with your routine instead of decorating your space.

There's something appropriate about carrying The Starry Night in a pocket. Van Gogh painted it from memory while staying in an asylum in southern France. It's a private, restless image. It works as something personal you carry, not just something displayed.

The Micro Wallet Format

Both designs are Micro Wallets: credit-card-sized when closed, 1.3mm thin, holds 6 to 8 cards and folded cash. Made from Tyvek, which is waterproof and tear-resistant. The compact size works for famous paintings because the compositions were designed to read at gallery distance, which means they still read clearly at wallet scale.

Available June 2

The Starry Night and Sunflowers both launch June 2 in the Micro Wallet collection. Limited edition. When they sell out, they're done.

If you missed the May Blind Box collection with Hokusai and Hiroshige, the Van Gogh release is a different format (regular product listings, not mystery packs) but the same "famous art on Tyvek" approach. Browse the full collection for everything else currently available.
