Nanami Takeuchi is back two weeks after Maneki Neko closed out June, this time with Usagi. Rabbit. On a Tyvek Slim Wallet. If you were following the June drops, this is the same artist continuing the Japanese cultural imagery arc, upsized to the format that holds more cards and adds RFID protection.
Why the Rabbit
Usagi (兎) is one of the recurring symbols in Japanese folklore, and it hits different notes than the maneki neko. Where the lucky cat is about commerce and prosperity, the rabbit is about the moon, agility, longevity, and folk tale magic. Different symbology entirely, same cultural well.
The moon rabbit specifically shows up in East Asian mythology across Japan, China, and Korea. Legend goes: instead of a man in the moon, there's a rabbit making mochi with a wooden mallet. Japanese schoolkids grow up hearing this. Autumn moon-viewing festivals still lean on the imagery. If you've watched Sailor Moon (the main character's name is literally Usagi Tsukino, translating roughly to "Rabbit of the Moon"), you already know.
Rabbits also show up in Japanese pop culture across generations. Kanahei's Piske and Usagi. San-X mascots. The endless parade of illustrated bunnies in modern Tokyo art. Takeuchi's design sits in that broader lineage without being derivative of any specific character.
The Design
Takeuchi's approach on Usagi is the same one she brought to Maneki Neko: contemporary illustration filtered through respect for the folk tradition. Not a tourist-shop reproduction. Not a Sanrio-style flattening. Her own take on the rabbit as cultural icon.
The Slim Wallet format gives the design more breathing room than a Micro would. Rabbits in Japanese art tend to work with negative space (the empty background around the figure is part of the composition). The larger surface area on the Slim lets the rabbit hold its own with the space around it, rather than filling every inch of a smaller frame.
Slim Wallet
The Slim Wallet holds 12 to 16 cards plus folded cash. About 3mm thin. RFID-blocking material in the lining. Tyvek construction means waterproof and tear-resistant. It's the format for people who carry more than a Micro can hold but still want to stay thinner than a leather bifold.
Who's Copping This
Japanese culture collectors. The Bearbrick shelf, the manga binder, the "one day I'll live in Tokyo" long-term plan crowd. Same audience as Maneki Neko, upgraded to Slim.
Sailor Moon fans. Yes, this design fits your list. The moon rabbit reference is coded into the name. Whether you grew up watching the original 90s anime or found the Crystal reboot later, you'll catch it.
Rabbit people. Not as universal as cat people, but they exist and they're passionate. If your search history has "house rabbits" and "bunny agility" in it, this drop is aimed at you.
Nanami Takeuchi followers who caught Maneki Neko. Building the pair is the play. This is the second half.
Rotation collectors upgrading from Micro to Slim. If you liked the Maneki Neko design but need more card capacity, Usagi in the Slim format solves both problems at once.
